Cassandra Andersson, Founder, Head Trainer, and Program Director
Cassandra is a highly accomplished dressage rider and multi-discipline professional who guides FSSH’s retraining program. Her expertise is grounded in high-level competition, having earned the prestigious USDF Bronze and Silver Medals.
She is currently training at the Grand Prix level, working toward her USDF Gold Medal. This extensive dressage foundation ensures all Thoroughbreds in our program receive balanced, systematic training crucial for their transition into sport horses.
Beyond dressage, Cassandra brings experience in jumpers, eventing, and hunters, allowing her to accurately assess and prepare horses for the right specialized second career. Her passion is in unlocking the potential of the Thoroughbred athlete.

The life-saving work we do at Fresh Start Sport Horses is made possible entirely by volunteers. We operate completely without federal or state funding, meaning every single person—from our founder and head trainer, professional riders, to our board members—donates their time and expertise. When you volunteer with us, you are joining an all-volunteer team dedicated to giving these horses the successful futures they deserve.
Vital Volunteer Roles
We have a few key ways you can lend your skills and passion to our mission.

This role requires an confident, advanced rider experienced working with green horses.
Grooming and Tacking: Prepare horses for training sessions.
Riding: Work with green horses to advance their skills and fitness.
Tack Care: Ensure all saddles, bridles, and equipment are clean and well-maintained.

Helpers are vital for the day-to-day care and well-being of our horses. This role is a great way to gain experience and provide essential support.
Horse Care: Feeding, grooming, and bathing horses (especially for adoption photos).
Turnout: Safely leading horses to and from their pastures.
Handling: Holding horses steady for photo shoots.

If you have an eye for a good story and strong digital skills, this role helps us share our mission with the world and connect horses with adopters.
Content Creation: Videoing and photographing horses to showcase their personalities and progress.
Digital Updates: Assisting with updates to our website, ensuring information is current and engaging.
